Prescriptions
Prescriptions are available from our practices. You may obtain relevant veterinary medicinal products from us directly OR request a written prescription that can be used to obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy. You will be informed on request of the price of any medicine that may be prescribed for your animal.
The Small Animal written prescription fee is £27 inc VAT.
A single prescription fee covers all medications for a single condition and is valid from the date of writing for a maximum period of 6 months. The quantity of medication included in a prescription is at the discretion of the veterinary surgeon and is dependent on the condition being treated, the health of your pet and the drugs being prescribed.
Due to the nature of the medication a prescription for controlled drugs is valid for 28 days from the date of writing.
If ordering your products from an internet retailer, we recommend you use a website accredited by the VMD Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS).
By law, a veterinary surgeon is only able to prescribe veterinary medicinal products following a clinical assessment of an animal under his/her care, ordinarily this will include a physical examination of the pet. How often a physical examination is required to allow a prescription to be written will vary from case to case and is at the prescribing vet's professional discretion, dependent on the complexity of the condition treated and the type of medication.
Under the regulations some medications do require a physical examination with a vet every time they are prescribed, such as antimicrobials, preventative parasiticide treatments and controlled drugs. A prescription may not be appropriate if immediate treatment is necessary.
